How It Works
Digital ICE™ for Photo Prints is a
hardware and software solution
developed by Applied Science
Fiction™. The ScanMaker 6800
has been specically designed to
meet the very high performance
requirements of the ICE™ system.
Digital ICE™ can be switched on or
off. When off the scanner operates
in the normal manner for both
reectives and transparencies. When
switched on, the system is able to
operate on subsequent photographic
prints when scanned (it does not
work with transparancies).
In operation, instead of the usual
single pass scan, two scans are
performed when Digital ICE™ is
switched on.
The rst scan is used by the ICE™
system to produce a defect map
of the area. This map identies the
precise location of the physical
defects on the scan. This is achieved
with Differential shadowing
technology and proprietary software
algorithms (see diagrams below
and right). Where defects occur,
shadows (however small) are picked
up by the ICE™ system.
The second and nal scan works
with the defect map to produce an
image, with the surface defects
removed/reduced.
The Results
It is important to note that results
can vary and depends on the sever-
ity of the defect(s) in the rst place.
You can expect noticeable correction
of cracks, creases, scrtaches dust,
lint and minor tears that have ruined
the originals. It does not correct
stains, mould, glue or discoloura-
tion of photo prints, nor tears or rips
where pieces of the photograph are
missing beyond recognition.

Image Registration Technology
As with most mechanical devices, parts can start to wear
our after extensive use. For scanners this can mean that
the initial tight tolrances required for quality scanning can
widen over time. If unchecked, image quality can suffer.
Microtek has alleviated this issue with Image Restoration
Technology (US patent pending). A unique suite of
algorithms built into the scanner control and adjust scan
head positioning and movement so that they are always
precise and smooth.
In order for the Digital ICE™ for Photo Prints to deliver
accurate, restored scans, it is essential that the scanner
mechanics remain precise and smooth over long periods of
time and use.
